woody Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I am looking into getting an application server to run curriculum software for departments such as Geography and possibly the KS3 tests too.. The only problem is, we can't afford a proper server spec. So I wonder what people think about using a good desktop machine and putting loads of RAM and HD capacity into it?
broc Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 We use an old P4 'desktop' system running Linux for our proxy; I considered using a similar machine to replace an old dual processor (PII) SCSI server running applications and print but eventually persuaded management to buy a budget DELL SATA server. We eventually bought a PE830 with 1gb ECC memory and a dual core P4 3.0ghz. I bought it with a single 80gb HDD and will add SATA disks as & when needed. It is hosting QCA ICT KS3 as well as applications & printing.
john Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 MY applications used to run on a P3 600MHz with 256 mb ram, with 2 80GB hard drives. Good old Compaq Deskpros!
