I am looking into getting an application server to run curriculum software for departments such as Geography and possibly the KS3 tests too.. The only problem is, we can't afford a proper server spec. So I wonder what people think about using a good desktop machine and putting loads of RAM and HD capacity into it?

We use an old P4 'desktop' system running Linux for our proxy; I considered using a similar machine to replace an old dual processor (PII) SCSI server running applications and print but eventually persuaded management to buy a budget DELL SATA server. We eventually bought a PE830 with 1gb ECC memory and a dual core P4 3.0ghz. I bought it with a single 80gb HDD and will add SATA disks as & when needed. It is hosting QCA ICT KS3 as well as applications & printing.
