Office on Chrome devices

Does anyone have any advice regarding Office on Chromebooks?

 

We have licenses for our students to be able to download and install Office on their own devices, however they cannot install Office from the Microsoft website when using a Chromebook.

 

I see Office is available from Google Play: Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint & More - Apps on Google Play but would that require them to pay, or is there a way for them to use their Office 365 license?

 

Also is there any benefit to using Office on the Play Store on a Chromebook compared to simply using the Office 365 website? If not then we won't bother with that.

They should be able to download the App free of charge via the App Store. They would then need to sign in with their school account on the App which would be tagged as one of their '5' devices they can install Office onto. This is assume you have the A1 Plus (or Microsoft365 Apps) licenses applied to their account.

 

Alternatively, they use the online versions in the browser just by logging into their Office Portals at https://portal.office.com - no license needed here.

The Android version of Office is pretty much the same functionality wise as the web based version, so there may not be an immediate benefit. I don't know what offline functionality the web based version has though, so that may be a benefit?

 

You can always allow the Office apps through the Play Store, and give them choice. You can download and install them for free, they'd just need to login with their Microsoft account to unlock the full functionality.
