Why does wireless have to be so painfull?

Just wondered if anyone had any helpful hints here. I have a wireless laptop running XP Pro SP2, when I have the laptops ethernet connection plugged in I am error free and everything works fine, but when I am using the wirless I am getting errors in the event viewer. Now the laptop still works wirelessly but these errors are a tad concerning. The first of which says that there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request, BUT I am logged in?! Go figure. Any help you peeps have would be grealty appreciated.

This kind of thing can be a DNS problem - if you do an IPCONFIG /all is the DNS server shown for the wireless card your internal DNS server?

 

The fact that you're logged in doesn't mean much - it's probably logged you in using default cached credentials (which is the default)

 

Can you ping other computers on your network but on a different subnet by name (ping by name will work on the same network because it will use broadcast name resolution if DNS fails)

 

If you type:

nslookup -q=srv _ldap._tcp.pdc._msdcs...

 

at a command prompt when you're on wireless do you get the IP of your PDC emulator? (replace the bit with your domain) - if not, then you're definitely getting the wrong DNS details.

I wouldn't let it concern you to be honest. If everything works as it should and you can logon, access the web and your shared areas, then I wouldn't worry.

Mines a pain at the minute. It keeps dropping the signal for no reason, and comes back on after about 30 seconds or if I reboot the WAP.

 

You could try changing the channel?

I have had those problems before and its been down to the wireless card

updated drivers and i was fine (my problems where with Intel based Wireless)

Some WAPs, those designed for home use, log events and then reboot when the log file fills up. If you have more than about two laptops attached the log file fills too quickly and the WAP keeps rebooting. "Industry standard" WAPs handle the log files better.

 

My preference is for a managed wireless solution and we have had good success with both the Netgear and the HP solutions on different sites. Of course you still need decent cards in the laptops!
