Cutting metal

Hi all,

 

I need to cut a metal panel. To be more specific it’s a panel and window off a Boeing 747.

 

I’d like to round the corners as it is currently rectangular shape.

 

Would a jigsaw be able to do this and cut through metal?

Anyone cut metal before and recommends a decent way?

A jigsaw with a metal cutting blade will easily cut the aluminium alloy that a 747 is made from. Please remember to wear safety glasses and gloves when using power tools. The metal dust can come off quite hot when cutting. Cut edges can be very sharp. Clean up the sharp cut edges with a file afterwards. Masking tape over the metal can prevent any damage to the surface and provide a handy surface for marking out. A dust mask may be required as some paint dust will be released. Clean up well with a vacuum cleaner afterwards.

Thank you for the advice. I'll look into getting a metal cutting blade today and follow your advice.

 

I'm hoping to hang it off the wall eventually once its done with lights behind it.

How and where did you get a 747 window? I’d love one - although everything I’ve seen is very expensive.

Several of the iconic British Airways and Virgin Atlantic 747's went to the Plane Reclaimers. https://www.planereclaimers.co.uk/

They sell all sorts of weird and wonderful pieces.

 

I'm mad about aviation so just wanted one. Some people probably think Im just mad.

 

Currently thinking whether I keep the paint or strip it and go for the polished aluminium look. Will need a very good paint stripper if I do this! But thinking a the moment keep it as it is.

Ah me too (about aviation). BigJetTV has got me through lockdowns lol

 

I’d love an aluminium look. They can’t use that livery on planes anymore due to the composites they now use to build.
