Morning all,

 

Going through our core count for our physical servers and it's scary on OVS, would it be any better if we perpetual our physical servers, or would that be a horrendous upfront cost.

 

Currently at 148 cores so 74 2 core licenses for Std and 122 cores so 56 for DC.

 

Hate the per core model, penalises faster and dual processor servers.

I'd always say OVS (or equiv) for the "free" upgrades.

 

I'm curious on your core count though, in terms of why your std vs dc is so different? What host CPUs are you running it on?

We have 9 physical servers running Standard, all dual proc, between 6 and 10 cores each, so 148 cores total.

 

We have 5 physical servers running DC(mostly virtual hosts and VDI hosts), again all dual proc, between 8 and 14 cores each, 122 cores total

 

Licensing is per 2 cores, so by my calcs we need 74 Std and 56 DC, unless my maths is off...

Ah, I thought you meant 148 cores total, then either 74 if using Std, or 56 if DC which is where I thought it didn't add up very well :p Didn't realise you meant both!

It depends how often you're going to update the version of Windows Server tbh. Me? I like to keep pretty up to date, but not everyone does.

 

Also, one thing I'd definitely look at is why you have so many physical servers these days. We used to have similar numbers of servers but we've reduced the whole lot down to 2 physical servers with dual CPUs in each, each one has, IIRC 56 or something like that cores.

Some of those std servers are domain controllers at different sites, as we have 5 sites over the UK, so to keep a copy of AD local, local storage etc, 2 are massive 56TB file servers(1 at HQ and 1 at remote site for DR) and 2 are BigBlueButton servers in a Scalelite pair, as they like bare metal for good voice and general "workiness".

 

Most of our main servers are virtualised, and have been since 2010, hence the 2 virtual hosts(2 at HQ and 1 at remote site for DR again), and the other 2 DC's are VMWare Horizon hosts.

Turns out my maths was wrong, the VDI hosts run ESXi, and only have 2 windows server VM's for the connection servers, as composers and security servers are now effectively gone, so we can licence with standard across the physical cores and have our 2 windows std VM licences, couple of grand saved :) minus 28 from DC count, plus 28 to Std count
