sshabir Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 Hi All, I am having an issuewith Windows Backup when the Host (Windows Server 2019) tries to back up theVirtual Server (WSrv2019) which fails every other day. It is so frustratingthat even after I run 'vssadmin list writers' command in powershell and thenReset VSS writers but it keeps going back to error state after couple of days. Help and advice ismuch appreciated. Warwick_Tech Posted December 9, 2020 Posted December 9, 2020 A quick thought - Windows Server Backup doesn't like drives over 15tb (I think, give or take) Are you running it via sheduled task or the gui? is it backing up to an IP or hostname?
sshabir Posted December 9, 2020 Author Posted December 9, 2020 Thanks Warwick_Tech- I am running a schedule task to back up Mon-Fri at 9Pm to an external Western Digital Hard Drive of 10 TB. What do you mean by is it backing up to an IP or hostname? I believe hostname as i can see the Virtual server name in the back up error logs
Warwick_Tech Posted December 9, 2020 Posted December 9, 2020 Thanks Warwick_Tech- I am running a schedule task to back up Mon-Fri at 9Pm to an external Western Digital Hard Drive of 10 TB. What do you mean by is it backing up to an IP or hostname? I believe hostname as i can see the Virtual server name in the back up error logs Ah, if it's directly attached then it will be a drive letter - I thought if it was hostname try changing it to IP but that won't work here the code I use is as follows: START BACKUP -backuptarget:\\server\folder\folder -include:c:,d: -allcritical -vssfull -quiet ^ C: is the windows partition, D: is all my VHD files -allcritical covers everything and -vssfull covers the VM's So yours would need to be something like; START BACKUP -backuptarget:D:\folder\folder -include:c:,d: -allcritical -vssfull -quiet
sshabir Posted December 10, 2020 Author Posted December 10, 2020 Sorry i don't understand. Do i need to create a Scheduled task where i already have one running at 9 Pm Mon-Fri. Where do i use this? START BACKUP -backuptarget:\folder\folder -include:c:,d: -allcritical -vssfull -quiet

sshabir Posted December 10, 2020 Author Posted December 10, 2020 I am using Windows Server backup to back up the VM to a external hard drive (2 TB)
Warwick_Tech Posted December 10, 2020 Posted December 10, 2020 I am using Windows Server backup to back up the VM to a external hard drive (2 TB) Ok, try it with a command line or scheduled task instead; https://www.ubackup.com/windows-server/windows-server-backup-once-a-week-6988.html But add -vssfull to the command line options
sshabir Posted December 10, 2020 Author Posted December 10, 2020 Thanks for the info Warwick_Tech. My confusion is that i do have a 'Scheduled Task' in the 'Task Scheduler' under- Task Scheduler Library\Microsoft\Windows\Backup Please see the pictures attached. Regards Shoaib
sshabir Posted December 10, 2020 Author Posted December 10, 2020 One thing i did notice in my 'Schedule Task' in 'Windows Server Backup' that it had 'VSS copy Backup' selected instead of the one you mentioned 'VSS full backup' which i have changed. I ran a manual backup again with all Errors reset on 'VSS writers' but it still failed. I will wait for the scheduled task to run tonight to see if that helps.
sshabir Posted December 16, 2020 Author Posted December 16, 2020 I resolved the issue by ditching Windows Server backup and using Veeam Backup and replication. I also changed the “Checkpoint” setting under Vm settings from “Standard checkpoint” to production checkpoint. The tool which really helped me is “Acronis Vss doctor” which is a free tool and helps you to troubleshoot the issue more easily. Thank you all for your help esp Baugaudin (Acronis) from Spiceworks.
TwistedHelixis Posted December 23, 2020 Posted December 23, 2020 I know you have now switched things to a different backup, but just in case someone else reads this, some server management software hook into VSS, this can cause Windows backup to bork. 1
sshabir Posted December 30, 2020 Author Posted December 30, 2020 The server was also backing up to the cloud using Redstor online backup. I am not sure if that was causing any issues as most of the time Redstor back up also failed. Since I have changed the check point setting I have not had any issues. 1

It shouldn’t do, we use redstor and windows backup on a few vms
