Do you sync Student Photos to G Suite?

We use Salamander to sync SIMS users to G Suite and I wondered if we should pull over the Student photos.

Do any Schools do that already or is this something that we should avoid?

We don't, I use GAM to change their pic to a default one to make it easier to identify them as Students and what year they are in. Keeps it uniform across the site

Interesting, what is the GAM command to do this please and do you need to run the command for every student account or once for each Year Group?

You can do it per OU e.g.

 

gam ou "your OU" update photo "path to your image"

 

Ours is just

gam ou "/Student Users/Senior School Users/Y07 users" update photo c:\Shield\bl_shield.png

 

Image is 250x250 pixels

User photos are publicly visible as part of the Google profile, I believe, along with their display name.

It's a shame, because it would be really useful to have names and photos in the school's G Suite directory, just not visible externally.

How would anyone get to the user profile? It seems a bit obscure to me? Unless they have emailed the person anyone how would anyone ever see the picture?

 

We have a synced for office 365 and find it really helpful. I know exactly who I'm talking to when emailing or chatting on teams and teachers like the easy identity via teams calls etc as well.

 

I did run it past our safeguarding team before hand and we decided the positives outwweigh the small risk. Any student or staff member that doesn't want it on there can request for it to be removed but this is removed out of our respect for their choice and not for any GDPR reason they pull out of the air as we deem the use of the picture important to the effective running of our business.

Yes definately. I guess you just make sure if/when you do it you get the right permissions / paperwork and properly assess it. Nothing is without risk
