Inserting YouTube Clips in PowerPoint Broken?

Hi All,

 

For playing YouTube videos in a Teams live lesson, we're advising staff to insert them into the PowerPoint (Office365 ProPlus Current Channel 13029.20344) using UI route Insert -> Video -> Online Video. This works really well, as when the students hit play it streams it directly on their own connection rather than via Teams, which can occasionally be choppy, especially if our staff members are Teams'ing from home on a slow connection.

 

This worked up to and including yesterday, however is now broken! I thought our SmoothWall was blocking something but it's not - and I came across a message on a Google support forum in the US where someone was saying similar. We can insert videos into PowerPoint from other sources such as Vimeo.

 

Are others in the UK having the same problem? I guess we either wait for YouTube to fix it (unlikely) or Microsoft to update PowerPoint? (unlikely?!)

Yes, we gave up on this. For us it did seem to be smoothwall as when we put the machine into Exceptions it would work. Smoothwall never managed to fix it for us and now that we are mostly G Suite based it's not an issue anymore.

It does the same for us even with the machine in exceptions. It worked perfectly until yesterday, we've been using this method since April :-/

 

Infact I've just tried it with my 4G connection and same result so it's definitely looking like YouTube have changed something their end with the way embedding works and Microsoft are going to need to catch up :-(

We found that if they want the video inserted into PPT then they needed to do the following for it to work in Internet Explorer

 

Internet Explorer

- internet options

- Advanced

- Security

- Untick 'Do not save encrypted pages to disk'

 

Inserting videos from Chrome does not work either.

Can you not insert an image with a picture of the thumbnail and hyperlink it to the actual YouTube URL as a workaround?

 

(Apologies if this is a red herring as I don't have a system to test on.)

You can, but if you hyperlink to the video it leaves PowerPoint and opens a web page. Which not only looks crap but if your presenting in presenter mode (Extended Desktop) then the video opens on your presenter monitor and not on the main slide screen.

 

Plus, why has Microsoft not removed this requirement for a browser they are trying to kill off ASAP.

Yes I am mad, but nothing to do with IE!

It's working fine again this morning without any local changes. I guess YouTube have changed their code!
