Chromebook settings for offsite users

I've got a situation here that I can't find a workaround for, and I get the feeling I'm missing something obvious!

 

We have lots of chromebooks in school, all managed and Students have user settings deployed on the OU in GSuite admin. However some of these chromebooks are now being lent out to students to use at home - we still want to enforce the settings and restrict them to only using our domain - which works OK apart from proxy settings!

 

When a student uses a chromebook in school their settings are applied based on their User OU - so they get the correct proxy settings. However when the same student logs in on the chromebook they have at home, the proxy settings are applied and they can't access the internet once logged in!

 

Is there any way in GSuite chrome management to force the proxy settings by device, rather than user? Using the 'networks' settings and adding the proxy in there is overidden by the users settings?

When setting up a network, you can set it by device instead of by user and also set the network proxy settings on that particular wi-fi network.

I tried that, but when they login their User settings apply - in here you have to specify a proxy, or say use no proxy. If I specify the proxy it doesn't work at home, and if I don't it doesn't work in school!

If you can have a transparent proxy at school, you can use Direct internet connection in the device WiFi profile and leave the user settings as user-configurable or auto-discovery.

 

If you can't use a transparent proxy, how about using WPAD on the network at school and setting the users to always use WPAD?

In the end I removed any proxy settings from the Users OU and added it to the Device OU Networks. I then made it so the Users settings allowed them to specify the proxy. That works as the Device Network settings for in school devices prevents the device from using any other Wifi network, and the home use ones don't have a Wifi set at all.

 

Problem with this is when the students bring a home use device into school it won't connect to the school wireless but thats not so much of an issue as if they're in school, then I would say they don't need to bring the chromebook in!

You can add the proxy settings to the school's WiFi connection profile in the Admin Console and remove it from the user settings.

We don't seem have these issues with the Chromebooks we lend out. I am too busy atm but will check my settings later

Just checked and I have the WiFi and proxy settings set under devices > networks and then our Chrome Devices OU, so its set for devices.

 

The proxy information has been entered under the WiFI tab in the same location, so is tied to our school WiFi SSID. If the Chromebook does not see our school SSID then the proxy is not enabled, if it does then the proxy is enabled.
