Gsuite groups

Hi all, we have been using gsuite for a number of years but never really bothered with groups, now we need to provision groups, is it as simple as turning on groups in dirsync, can i limit the number of groups that get sync'ed, will this mess with anyones passwords?

 

can't afford for anything to go wrong at the moment so want to make sure i am not missing something really stimple

In the current circumstances, I'd recommend speaking to Salamander Software.

You can turn on groups in the dir sync (GADS?) It will only sync groups based on the settings you assign it so you can choose to only sync groups from specific OUs if you wish.

Thanks @RLR this is the way i will do it i just wanted to make sure that there is no potential to mess anything else up, i seem to remember changing something withing my dirsync before and everyone's password was changed.. hence my caution to alter it now its working well.

A few really important things to note:

 

GCDS has a configurable limit for changes being made to groups. There are some threshold values for things like %change that it will 'allow', but you can up these thresholds to whatever you want/need for the initial settings up and population/emptying of groups as you get up to speed.

 

The default settings for newly created Google Groups are not great. You'll want to go into the settings (in the Google Groups web app) for each group to turn off things like web posting, message archival and whether external senders can send to the group. You likely won't want those turned on for your vanilla email groups.

 

If you have groups that you don't want students to be able to send to, you'll need either content compliance rules or routing rules in Gmail to reject messages to those groups from students.
