Hard Drive Destruction! en masse!

Hey guys, I have inherited the problem of a large volume of dead hard drives. Some accessible and some not. I do not want to toss these intact.

 

Know of any good ways to easily break the ability to get into these?

 

I was thinking of making a couple holes with a power drill, but If there's anything easier I'm all ears.

Apparently the MOD use an angle grinder... I imagine that would be quite effective

You could take them down your technology department and let some students loose on them.

Wow!... Now that's tech therapy with a real twist

I just stick my knackered ones on the column drill in tech and put a few holes in em. Doesnt take long at all.

Platters Shatter? Consumer drives are normally Aluminium, and I have yet to come across a Glass platter even though they do exist.

 

Lump Hammer will work fine though, pillar drill will also put them beyond use. Buy a bulk degausser if you have money.

 

Or take them to your local shooting range and have yourself some fun.

I have, while not paying sufficient attention or noticing the unusually light platter I did the "fold the platters with my hands" trick .

 

We drill them or (for laptop drives) snap them in half and fold the platters.

What I have done in the past with 2000+ HDDs is get an intern to sit and drill through the lid into the platters of all the drives with a Black and Decker Power Drill. Noone will recover from that.

 

with desktop drives you'll just drill a hole, but with laptop drives the platters will shatter
