Excuse me for posting a stupid question but ..... What are the advantages of acccess to Fronter going through Shibboleth? I understand it allows access to multiple systems with one username but what advantages are their when LgFL has just got fronter in the federation?

The advantage of Shibboleth is just what you said - it allows access to multiple systems with a single sign-on. The goal of the government is to have a single username that follows a pupil from their first school all the way to year 13. Introducing the infrastructure to do this now is the beginning of that plan.

The other, current, thing it will allow, is for better integration in an MLE.

Going through Shibboleth in any RBC is the best *long term* way to go. Although there is little for you as an end user to notice it actually means that the integration in the back end is being forced through more anonymous methods, allowing for a greater range of third party providers and also gives the school a greater choice of methods of sharing data between external partners.

In reality, if you use Fronter it makes little or no difference. If you also happen to use other products that are Shibboleth -federated it means that LGfL are doing their bit to make sure everything fits in properly.

Err, well beyond year 13 :-)

many resources used by universities and colleges are now "shibbolised" We used to use Athens for much of this but from this year Athens will no longer be centrally funded so we're moving to Shibboleth (which can be free)

If you are running Shibboleth then your students can get access to a big range of development software free from Microsoft - Dreamspark details here.
