Hi All

I could do with some advice before we decide to go ahead with InTune for student device management.

We will be rolling out BYOD for staff and students but I was infromed yesterday by the IT Management company who runs our network that all devices need to be wiped as part of the setup process for InTune. Is this really the case? If so, how have schools managed that with parents - and staff?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

what type of devices (android/ ios/ windows)? and what kind of management? Actually any way you cut it I cannot see why you need to wipe a device.

A mix of devices will be expected.

We would like to manage apps, security and AV etc using 365 accounts.

Currently students connect via a student WiFi network with a generic password.

I thought that students could download the app, log in with their school account and voila. IT Management says no, students will have to bring devices in to be wiped and then have InTune installed.

I would be really interested to know if other schools are using BYOD and InTune and how it's setup.

No. Absolute stuff and nonsense, tosh, total piffle, complete hogwash, utter bunkum on their part. Their claim is bad (as well as incorrect) and they should feel bad.

Not in education any longer but I’m managing several thousands of devices worldwide for a global org, byod and corporate, iOS, android and windows, so I’m comfortable in my knowledge vs theirs on this (actually based on their claims, I’m comfortable with my cat’s knowledge of Intune vs theirs...)

If the device was being managed via DEP, for example, that would be different, but for byod this simply isn’t the case at all.

I think Roberto's sufficiently nailed my view too :D The only saving grace I can think of is that they have misinterpreted a request from you ..

Was actually thinking “in their defence, maybe one of the school’s requirements means they’re having to do that” but even then... wouldn’t you just tell the school it was their requirements that were forcing the issue if they came back and said “do you really have to wipe pupil’s and parent’s devices? That seems extreme?”.

In fairness, my cat would struggle with that because she’s not much of a communicator unless fish for dinner is involved, but other than that I stand by my last post on reflection...

For byod, it really is a simple case of create Intune compliance, configuration and app policies, test until you’re happy then tell people to install company portal, and then do something with conditional access to enforce its use.

Hi Roberto

Many thanks for your reply. What you describe here "For byod, it really is a simple case of create Intune compliance, configuration and app policies, test until you’re happy then tell people to install company portal, and then do something with conditional access to enforce its use." was exactly what I planned to do. I queried the need to wipe a device four times with them and on each occasion was told that it was necessary.

I'm really unhappy with them as a company as nothing they do works correctly or is ever finished. Unfortunately it's not in my power to manage the contract, I'm just stuck with it. Back to management I go...

Many thanks for your help.
