Can't open file path is more than 259 characters

Some users are getting the following on sharepoint user are getting Can't open the file because the file path is more than 259 characters. This is when opening a workflow from sharepoint. If I open the same link it works with out issue?

 

Any suggestion?

It's a historic limitation of Windows and Office since Windows 95.

 

The answer is to rename the file, the folders or move the file to a shorter path.

There is a registry key that allows you to have long file paths now.

 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\LongPathsEnabled

Just to add too as I've had this crop up when migrating onsite shared folders to Google Team Drives etc and a helpful tip is to browse so far deep in the folder structure and then shift, right click and do open in command prompt.

 

It will open a command prompt and name the path to that point as X:/ (assuming you have nothing mounted as an X: drive) then you can go further in this command prompt.
