Skype to Teams question

Morning,

Just had the deputy ask me to install Skype as their regular contacts at the LA used it. I installed it but get an error when signing in with a 365 logon

 

Microsoft account doesn't exist. Enter a different account or get a new one.

 

Then the penny dropped that we already have Teams installed and I read Teams has replaced Skype so if that's correct no point installing Skype in the first place.

 

So does Teams replace Skype and if how would one call someone not in the address book and can staff members be called by others outside the school?

 

If that's not possible and Skype is indeed needed are Skype and 365 logons not connected meaning I need to setup Skype logons?

Teams does not replace Skype, Teams replaces Skype for business, the two are not interoperable.

 

You cannot communicate between Teams and Skype, it is on the roadmap though.

It's more likely that the LA use SfB rather than regular Skype. Skype (personal) isn't able to be tied into your tenancy - you'll need to use SfB which should already to be active and licensed as you're using Teams.

If its consumer Skype you need an account.

 

If its Skype For Business you can run a web version without an account or without the full Skype For Business client installed. I did it today with a call with Dell and it worked great.

Thanks everyone. I'm still not 100% sure where to go from here so spoke to the deputy again about what they needed Skype for and they want to take part in a group chat with others from the LA. One to one chats were not really needed at this point.

 

Looking in the Teams admin center / external access I've got both 'Users can communicate with other Skype for Business and Teams users' and 'Users can communicate with Skype users' enabled and nothing in domains so that should allow calls to or from all external domains if I understand it correctly.

 

Sorry to sound like a broken record but with what we have already how would the deputy join the LA group meeting using Teams?

If someone from the LA group sends them a meeting request via skype they should just be able to join the group-- i may be wrong- as its been a few days since i did this last.

 

So invite sent to their outlook, accept, open Teams calender, find meeting, join meeting-- i think.
