On-Prem to Cloud Backups - Who do you use?

Currently taking on a project of migrating around 6 schools to cloud based backups. Have trialled Azure Backups which works great and is extremely cheap for the small site we have tested. Looking at bigger scale projects we have ongoing where storage ranges into the 1-2tb region, costs ramp up quite a bit and I know there are cheaper options out there.

 

Put simply, who do you use? And how do you rate them? Obviously encrypted and GDPR compliant are a must.

 

Also, have considered building something and hosting centrally which sounds like a nice little project, but in all honesty I want to pay a little more and have one less thing to worry about as we are a very small team!

After looking at the normal players, redcloud/azure etc etc we went with iLand as we use Veeam (Cloud Connect) and then offload to iLand for the priority servers, but that's mainly down to the size of our backups etc we can't afford to do it all (Other off-site backups are used for the other servers)

 

You don't mention what backup software you use, but for Veeam it's literally plug in an ip/username and it acts as a backup server etc

 

Are those schools all linked like a MAT or separate? If they're linked I'd just go down the route of replicating between schools, once it's setup free forever, and a lot easier to get a full copy of backups if something goes wrong Only reason we didn't do that route is because our local schools aren't linked directly to us

What's the reason the backups are being taken? Backup means so many things, long term archive, multiple copies to recover old versions of files, to save data when the school has burnt down, to save data when the server room has burnt down, to save data when a drive or 3 have failed, or to save data when you accidentally wipe the server.

 

How long are you storing what, and when it's needed, how fast, and where?

Probably not what you are after but I use Google backup and sync to backup data drive to Google drive, which is free and then use spanning backup which is a cloud to cloud back to back up Google drive. Spanning is about £20 per user account per year but they require a minimum number of accounts I believe.

 

At another school I do it the other way round and backup google drive to the onsite server using Cube backup which costs us £2 per year lol.
