New Ryzen 3 1200 AF is apparently in the wild now too on the 12nm process - so should be some reasonable headroom for overclocking too!

I saw that this morning. If it's anything like the 1600AF, it will either be like tracking down a unicorn, or you will see the price cranked up to a silly level. TBH, the 3300X is probably the best budget buy atm and by the time sellers put a mark up on it (and they most likely will) it will be very close in cost terms, and way ahead in performance.

Looks like the Ryzen XT isn't (at least on launch bios) that great of an option - might be interesting to see if the prices of the X and the non X versions come down a bit more, but would be surprised on much movement until later on with the 4000 series set to launch later this year

TBH, I think AMD launched those just to say to Intel, look we can match you with our current gen verses your new gen chips. When the new AMD CPU's are launched I have no doubt they will have a blinding level of performance, after all, you wouldn't do this unless you knew that you wouldn't embarress yourself by having your last gen on par with your new line-up.

Well, it seems Intel are in a spot of bother as their 7nm process (which AMD has been on since July last year) has been delayed until 2022 and, if some reports are to be believed, won't see the light of day in desktops until Q1 2023!

By this point AMD is reported to have moved to 3nm! Some are pointing out that this is due to Intel having a bit of an internal power struggle, but it's not good news for them.

If you watch the vid it looks like it's internal politics at Intel which are causing them problems. But yes, it's not looking good for the next couple of years if they have botched their 7nm process, which is a shame as I'd have liked to see the competiton between AMD and Intel at that level. Currently this gives AMD an almost free ride over the next couple of years.

AMD have a chance to close the gap a bit - will they ever be as big and influential as Intel - unlikely. But yes, it would be good for all of us if the market shares were more even (60/40 or even better 50/50), but also, its not good if 1 company has the complete dominance, either way.

 

Will AMD become as complacent as Intel? the roadmap for the next few years seems rather good (although with the lack of APUs in the stack and rarely of the same generation as the main chips this does hit them), however, AMD are unlikely to ever get to that stage, as it is very unlikely they will ever overtake Intel. The interesting one is going to be seeing how ARM do, with Apple taking the leap, and rumours of nVidia wanting to buy them and make a target onto desktop and laptop and make the duo a trio. There are some interesting times coming up

My aging PC (X99/i7-5820k) failed on me a few months ago so I finally got round to fixing it last week. I needed a new CPU/mobo and, with most of the componets I intended to re-use being 5 years old, I wanted to keep costs down. Thought about holding off for the 4000 series but I don't want to wait another month and given I'm buying at the entry level I doubt it'll make much difference anyway.

 

So I deciced to go for a B550 motherboard and a Ryzen 3100 CPU. Gotta say I'm pretty impressed with performance it offers despite being the lowest tier processor in the AMD 3000 range. Definitely worth considering if you're after a budget build.
