Recommendation for personal printer

For some family things we will be doing over the next few years we will be printing out a fair chunk and so I’m looking to pick up a reasonable quality mono laser for network and possibly WiFi printing at home.

Brother used to be my brand of choice because the last ones we had just worked and worked.

 

I’m open to ideas but looking for a reasonable initial price even if it means toner is a little higher. We also need to be sure that it will have a healthy supplier of toner carriages/drums/etc. for the next 3 years and not just a cheap unit because it will be end of life soon.

At home we just brought. A HP - MFP 178nw All-in-One Wireless Laser Colour Printer as our old inkjet photo quality one gobbled up lots of ink and then didn't print even after a clean. The small size factor of this one means it just about fits on a shelf as well.

 

Edit _ don't know about toner availability i may have to look into that tommow and see if I need to order some now.

I would suggest either Brother or Canon for home printing. One of my friends has a brother inkjet AIO, doesn't have a bad word against it, has had it years and says it's cheap to run.

@GrumbleDook, it’s worth looking out for a second hand one.

 

We have had an HP CP1025 (colour laser) for years which has a small footprint and is very economical on the toner and the kids are likely to want colour printing occasionally with school work

 

I double installed it with “Mono Printer” as the default set up so it only uses the black toner to print that (which is cheaper). The family can print colour by selecting “Colour Printer” which is the same machine with different settings”

 

It’s running on compatible cartridges. When the drum eventually went last year, I replaced that with a compatible too.

 

We have our printer local installed on the desktop in our study and shared with others on our home network. It’s a bit of a nuisance because you have to have the study PC booted for anyone else to print, but it’s not the end of the world. Also the double install thing has to be done on every laptop that wants to connect to it.

 

There is/was a CP1025N version that could run stand alone on the network. With hindsight, I should have got that!

I bought one of the Epson Ecotanks about 2 years ago, with light to moderate usage I'm still on the original ink set. New ink bottles are really cheap.

 

The only catch is its pretty slow and the print quality isn't the best. For documents I can't fault it and it has easily paid for itself at least once.

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but HP inkjets always used to have the head in the ink cartridge, so essentially the printer could be stood for "years" and then revived just with a new set of cartridges, unlike others that just dried up and became garage door stops

We got HP Office Jet with the instant Ink program. No problems with it so far. (4 years old) Got a spare set of ink carts. Ink carts normally turn up within a few days of dispatch.

I have a Samsung Laser printer, cost about £50 with a toner that lasted ages. Bought 4 years ago, I bought a new toner this year.
