Trouble booting from a WIM. Help!

Hi all,

 

 

I'm going to preface this by saying that I am a bit out of my depth!

 

We purchased some laptops for school, and when they arrived I facepalmed and realised that they didn't have an RJ45 so couldn't PXE boot!

 

I'm trying to find a way to export the image from WDS onto a bootable USB where I could install the OS, however I can only export from WDS as a WIM file!

 

Maybe this is a silly question, but I don't have much experience with imaging... How do I convert a WIM to an ISO so I can boot?

You can google things like MDT to USB and you'll get help

 

But I've found many USB to RJ45 network doobries will PXE boot. Though note, it's not guarantee they will work in the PXE environment, so it may boot then have no network!

If you can't get a USB to RJ45 single to work (MS Surface pros will only do that with MS dongles), I've used a combined USB hub and Ethernet dongle before. Make a bootable USB with "litetouchPE" wim (done within MDT) and then it will connect back to your deployment share and image as though it had pxe booted.

Depending on how big the image is, in the past i've exported the image from WDS and copied and pasted the .wim file into the source folder, on to a bootable Window usb just have to make sure you rename your wim to install.wim. Not the best solution as images can be massive but it works!
