Warranty vs Changing Hardware

Good Afternoon All,

 

Slightly OT question, more for personal rather than work, but anyone know off hand what the normal terms for warranty voiding if you change hard drives/RAM etc on computers are? I know with work/business accounts you can normally get away from it as they always assume the cases are opened etc (Obviously won't replace that 3rd party piece, but desktop wise)

 

Obviously individual companies may do different, but looking at some new computer options and can't find any within a decent price bracket that have the storage I need!

 

More and more of these new boxes seem very unfriendly for any repair at home!

Most warranties will not let you do any kind of home repair unfortunately.

 

If I was going to buy + customise an off the shelf PC I'd probably run it for a few weeks stock to make sure it wasn't a lemon, then just do the work and forget the warranty (given that I could probably fix whatever went wrong myself, and am willing to do so). Of course, not everyone will necessarily want to take that risk.

Aye, that was my concern

 

Was hoping to condense down the masses of cables/equipment around my desk to a nice shiny aio/monitor mounted micro etc, but obviously these really aren't very repairable in all senses!

 

Just silly money for any decent spec one, and no way with my current storage to manage on a 256 or less drive

 

Guess as you say, always an option to try it out and make sure it works before spicing it up

What about buying a NUC or 2nd hand small PC that can be mounted to the back of a monitor? Some NUCs are tall and take an extra drive, and if you buy 2nd hand jobbie no need to worry about warranty. I've run a NUC in a cupboard for over 2 years now 24/7. Admittedly the 2.5" drive died about 3 months ago but that drive was 4-5 years old and I guess using as a NVR drive did not help.

Aye might be a good route to go, guessing most NUCs come barebone. Did you get any specific NUC for your cupboard? (Thinking fanless etc?)

Originally bought it to run ESXi but was limited as only one NIC and I setup an additional USB NIC which proved easy enough to do but troublesome and unreliable under ESXi.
