I have to say though, what possibly are the software company going to do when they receive it? Perform a restoration? Why can't they do that in-house?

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Surely, if they will insist on sending copies of confidential data, there must be a more secure method than using CityLink.

Not sure how much trust to put in a story which, in the same sentence refers to the same item as a "tape" and a "disk"?

 

It's possible that if it is a tape they no longer have a drive to read it (or perhaps have a drive but can't read it) so are trying to get a data recovery company to read it for them.

 

I doubt that there is a 100% safe way of transferring magnetic media; you could use registered post but even that goes missing occasionally. City Link provide a service where, in theory, the package is tracked at each stage so it ought to be safe to use them.
