BAsic question about Shadow Copies

I have read a few articles now about Shadow Copies. I know you have to install a msi package to al th emachines to enable the users to use the facility.

 

To be honest all i want to use it for is for admin use. So, if a kid comes tous and says i have lost/deleted/ file etc i can just log on to the file server that shadow copies runs on and replace if for them. I don't really want them to be able to have access to the facility themselves.

 

Does this sound stupid to do it this way or has anyone else have any ideas?

Then all you need to do is install the client on your machine

You only need the shadow copy client if your workstations are using 2000. XP has it built in.

 

If you don't want them to see the Previous Versions tab I think you can turn it off with a GPO.

Beware if you "log on to" the file server, don't access the volume by drive letter, you need to access through a share even if "on" the server.

Shadowcopies is a great feature as nearly all our restore jobs were accidental deletions and such.

 

The only bad thing I've found is that when you delete something they shouldn't have (flash games, too much music etc), they have a habit of restoring it again!

 

I may look into the GP of removing the tab for users who abuse the system though, at the minute I have to create a new account and copy only allowed things to the new area!

removing the tab, so only sysadmin could do it would be a help, but the way M$ describe it, makes it sound like they hadn't thought of that!
