I'm looking for modules for a HP 5406zl (J8697A) switch, We are looking to add more fibre links in the school but we are currently at full capacity. Can anyone recommend any places to get these from?

Thanks

We use our local supplier for these, AMC in Kettering, Northants. Always been very good for pricing and have always been able to beat the "big boys" by more than a substantial margin to the point where the big boys accused them of punting grey goods.

Still, if that's the older version of that switch then your best bet might actually be Ebay.

Thanks for that will give them a try, it is the older model bought back in 2011 i think. Edited by woz1994

Those switches can use v2 ZL modules, if I remember correctly. Those still seem to be available new.

Any HPE partner should still be able to source them. I generally use European Electronique for this kind of thing.

Of course, they’re not at all cheap so getting one second hand will save you a packet

I picked some up from Ebay for a fraction of the new cost. Had never been registered for warranty either. Got a second PSU too.

The new costs were £1500 or so, I paid about £200.

If you're adding loads of fibre and no copper, they do a 24 port SFP module (can't remember the part number but it was about £1500 new when we got it in 2014).

J9537A. Not seeing any bargains on there at the moment, but then trade is quiet at present.

Shame I'm isolating working from home as I'm in a vulnerable group, we have one of these in the switch with nothing plugged into it that I'd possibly let go since we switched to 10gig. But guessing you want it now not in 12 weeks.

We are not really in a rush at the moment, would be nice but we have other priorities at the moment. We are taking advantage of having a reduced amount of students in school and are hopfully going to be finishing the roll out of our new cctv system and all being well imaging all the computer rooms while there is less demand on the network.

Just out of interest how much has the switch to 10gig cost as a whole?

We put 2530-48G switches with a 10 gig uplink in 3 of the remote cabs (then the existing edge switches each had a 4Gig link into that), and an 8 port SFP+ module in the 5406zl. Think we spent about £5k in total

Edit: memory fails me, was more than £3k.
