JRA Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 Hi all, I need a patient hand. As usual, and again... Had a 'mare in Jan sticking an RDS server up for staff BUT that's now working a treat with Guacamole too. Very happy. Would like to set up a separate RDS for students. So, I imagine I install the roles and configure as before and then I need to get CALS. So, I'd go eg here: https://www.senetic.co.uk/product/R18-05736 , then buy, say 200? We've got 900-odd kids but I don't think there'd be more than 200 on at once, and the issued CALs 'expire' after two months. That right? So I talk to the online CAL reseller and they send me a thingy and I import the things into RDS licensing wossname and all is good then. That also right? If I'm not right can someone patient and kind right me a bit? Thanks everyone.
localzuk Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 You would need an "External Connector License" for each RDS server they use too I believe (so, if it ends up being a farm of 2 RDS servers, you need 2 external connector licenses I think) - as children aren't covered by the normal licenses when connecting in from outside IIRC, as they're not technically employees. 1

Thanks for that! So, for the staff one I won't need an External Connector License I'm guessing, as staff and students will use separate ones (with the option of staff using the student one in a crisis but not vice versa.) So I get one of those on top of however many CALs? Thanks for the patience.
localzuk Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 Staff don't need one, no. The external connector license is for users who are not "employees, contractors or agents". And yeah, that's right. However, with RDS - if you have OVS-ES licensing, you can get RDS CALs for your FTE count, and this will cover all your students as well - you just put that number in the licensing server with your agreement number. 1

That's smashing - thanks for that! You got any idea where my agreement number would be in the VLSC pages? I'm looking, seems like I've found every number bar that. I'll keep digging too but thanks much.

Found it all, proceeded as you described. I think I did it all right, in the licensing tool that server now has happy green ticks! You're a gentleman thank you very much.
JRA Posted March 6, 2020 Author Posted March 6, 2020 Just in case Googlers from the future dig this up I had a 'mare getting RDS licensing diagnosis special console permissions manager or whatever Microsoft call whatever it is to work. In short I had the following and fixed it: https://www.tbngconsulting.com/blog/bid/404182/Licensing-mode-for-the-Remote-Desktop-Session-Host-is-not-configured

We have RDS CALs for FTE, does that mean we are covered for students too? Just need external connector? Any MS links to confirm this please?
3s-gtech Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 We have RDS CALs for FTE, does that mean we are covered for students too? Just need external connector? Any MS links to confirm this please? IME, no. This is one case where FTE doesn’t cover students from back when I researched it. Would be happy to be proved wrong! 1

Would be happy to be proved wrong!I believe you are wrong. I've operated this way with OVS-ES since having an RDS setup that children use - I had my reseller double check when we started too. But it only covers it internally - ie. If you're using thin clients. It doesn't cover external use, you need an external connector for each RDSH on top. 1

However, external connector licenses are for non-pupils/non-employees of the school, e.g. contractors. They’re not needed for remoting in: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/product-licensing/client-access-license 1

johnlevis Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 The thing to bear in mind on that link is that it relates to business users. "An external user is a person who does not have employee-level access" - in education, it's the staff on FTE who are the 'employees',
3s-gtech Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 See, when I looked at it, I was told that children aren't classed as employees, so come under the definition for external users. As I said, it's a minefield. All i can see on that is that it's in higher education that students are regarded as 'customers' so need EC licenses. You can also purchase an unlimited ECL which covers all authenticated users. Here's an old thread from Edugeek on it: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/licensing-questions/88487-ees-rdp-cals-2.html It suggests that for RDS CALs x FTE is enough for internal use by staff and students, where external requires RDS CALs x total users. Or an ECL licence to cover it all.
johnlevis Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 Note that's for an EES licence - we're probably talking about an OVS/ES agreement
