That damn Heinemann geography software again

When I try to load the geography tests on a windows 2000 pc, it comes up with an error saying

 

Heinemann Geography Error

Unable to load the OCX due to the following reason:
Error Description:   Object doesn't support this property or method
Page address:        File//y:\year 7\Heinemann\KS3 Geography Interactive Assesment\Year 7\Pupil\default.htm
Line number:          11

 

I hate this software, any advice.

 

It works when I login as admin but not as pupil.

I had many issues with this. My post is here:

Things to check:

 

1. Have you deployed the Goal plugin?

2. If you have flash player 8 then there are permission issues with it and you need to set them on your default profile or whatever method you use.

 

The easiest way to get round this is to set up a website in IIS for it and this will get round the permission problem.

 

The error you ahve stated sounds like the goal plugin though.

Cheers Chris, it's the goal plugin that's causing the problem.

 

Any ideas on how to automate the install for it, if i remember rightly it is user specific and everyone who logs on has to install it to be able to use the software.

The goal plugin is an MSI. What kind of environment do you have? I just deployed it to my machines via a GPO. The only annoying thing as a result of this is when the users first open a web page with flash on the goal plugin install runs :x Everything flash related still works though.

 

The user specific stuff is to do with Flash 8 security settings. This can be overcome by setting up a simple website in IIS and dumping the contents in.

I have an index pages that links to the year 7, 8 and 9 version.

I've got a Windows server 2003 with mixed 2000 and XP clients, i've got it working on my XP clients using the GPO, but it just won't work on the 2000 clients yet. I'm still battling though, got till monday to sort it.

It works ok for me on both XP and 2000 I didnt have to do anything different.

When I load it on the XP clients it installs the goal plugin. However, when I load it on the 2000 clients it comes up with the error. Any ideas why it would not be installing the goal plugin?

Does it need something else installed to work? .NET framework or DirectX comes to mind for example.

 

You should be able to push these sorts of things out with WSUS (which I assume ChrisH does). Perhaps thats the difference?

I've given it a try on my laptop, XP pro SP2, completly up to date. Software brings up the original error.

 

getting very annoyed now, if I deploy the goal plugin it works, it's definitly the plugin. If I put the plugin into startup on the pupils profile, it brings up errors because it wants to write to registry.

Yipee, persistance pays off, Thanks to everyone for helping, I found out that if you assign the goal plugin to both computer and user using assigned as the deployment, it seems to work. Ok so it installs on bootup and when you open the software, but at least it works.
