I've been reviewing our IT Disaster Recovery plan, and there is a particular (very unlikely) scienerio that we want to prepare for.

 

If there is a powercut, and the building needs to be evacuated.

 

We have just ordered 6 cheap mobile phones, so parents can be contacted should they need to be, but we will struggle to get parent contact details. We do have paper records, but there will likely be a few changes between the time that they were printed.

 

I'd like something that would routinely export parent contact details to an external server. We don't mind paying a small amount to rent an external server.

 

My roadmap is

 

SIMS Exports to CSV

CSV backup to external server (maybe OneDrive, or AWS)

That backup can then be accessed remotely (from a mobile phone/laptop, etc)

 

 

Any ideas?

Scheduled SIMS report that runs daily and exports to a OneDrive/Sharepoint sync folder on your PC that then gets automatically sync'd to O365 via the OneDrive client?

We have BitLocker protected USB sticks as part of our emergency procedure. The USB drives include maps of the site, a copy of the emergency plan and some reports run out of SIMS (staff and student contact details, room timetables and students' timetables).

 

It's a bit of a manual task, though, as we use the scheduled reports feature from within SIMS .net (Focus -> Alerts -> Schedule Reports). Those have to be manually opened in order to take delivery of them, so to speak. You can't have them automatically exported to some storage location. The USBs are cycled on a weekly basis so that the data on them is reasonably current: I update the one in my desk drawer with new report output, then go and swap it with the one stored in reception, repeat the following week. Members of SLT have the BitLocker key and it's reasonable to expect that a school laptop will be available to use. It does take up a few minutes of my time, but I suppose it means that we know the data will be there if we come to need it.
