Google File Stream Directory

I remotely installed Google File Stream before Christmas and sent an email letting everyone know it exists, what it does etc. so of course now it's March people are finally trying to use it and ask me questions!!

 

The one problem I am having is it updates itself REGULARLY and the ridiculous directory means that the desktop icon I have pushed out to staff is redundant within days and I am having to constantly create a new shortcut. Google in their infinite wisdom have included the version number as a folder in the path e.g. C:\Program Files\Google\Drive File Stream\36.0.18.0 so of course whenever the version number changes they end up with a white, useless desktop icon...

 

If anyone has had similar issues or has any bright ideas as to how to get around this I would be eternally grateful.

We dont create the desktop icon, just let them file it in the start menu.

I've done this using a shortcut to a PowerShell script that has been compiled to an exe that looks for the latest version in the folder.

The exe sits on a share and we put a shortcut to it on the desktop for users, always finds the highest version number in the folder and runs that.

I understand you might not trust my exe, so the PowerShell code is below, and you can compile it to an exe using PS2EXE yourself.
