Question to those that have recently moved to another MIS from SIMS.

What have you done with your old install of SIMS? Have you kept it running in the background or turned it off? How have you licensed (if you've got to that point) your SQL instance? Have you moved your SIMS database to SQLExpress to do away with the cost to MS every year? Are you keeping the database running until the last student on it is 25 (or 35 if they are a looked after student).

The reason for asking is pretty simple, our MS agreement is due and on it is the SQL license which we license per processor (so in pairs).

I'll be turning off old server next week (migrated at half term) and seeing if anything's broken before I destroy it.

SQL 2016 Standard I believe.

No need to keep DB running on old server if you've migrated the DB to new server.

You may be able to move to server licensing only, and ditch the SQL CALs if you want to do it that way. Would save a fair bit, but leave you with a functioning server (you could connect to SIMS on the server still). You could migrate it to an Express DB, but not sure how well that'd work after the DB had the legs of SQL Standard - I'd guess it'd be painful! Other option is simply shut it down, and only fire it back up if absolutely necessary - which you may be able to do with the 180 day 'trial' of SQL Standard covering you for six months.

If this is for historical purposes only and it's not being used regularly, I'd VM the old server into an image and drop that on a network-share, then you can run it off a laptop/desktop when/if required.

If you have paid for the licence for SQL then you wont have to pay again, the same for the SIMS licences.
