Hi all,

 

I am an IT Manger for a Trust that serves primary, secondary and further Ed.

 

I'm looking for some recognised training that is ideally achievable whilst 'on the job'

 

What can people reccomend?

Yes both staff and technical responsibilities. We are currently going through a period of change.

If you can secure a small amount of funding and agree a few hours a week dedicated to training, I'd suggest looking at some online platforms such as EdX, Coursera, FutureLearn, Udacity, PluralSight, Udemy etc. Those will give some options both for technical skills and management skills training. To be honest, I suspect it's going to be challenging to get 'on the job' training unless your employer has a very specific skills they feel need investing in. However, if you can secure good man management training, it's value can be significant. When I led a sizeable team a while back, I'd argue, that through effective management practice, if I can improve the performance of those in my team by 5% each, I've returned at least half my salary! Bad management can equally have the opposite effect!

I've always self studied and now a Microsoft certified candidate in various technologies.

Join the BCS and become an MBCS as soon as you qualify.

 

Then work towards CITP (Chartered IT Professional). It's a well recognised qualification and will always look good on your CV and will differentiate you.

If the online learning appeals, I got this today. Basically, £300 for a year's access to many of their courses.

Why don't you see if you can tap into the apprenticeship funding that your organisation pays into? (I'm assuming that as your trust caters to primary, secondary and FE).

 

You then have a choice of NVQ 3 & 4, as well as the Degree Apprenticeship programs (eg from the OU). Both these types of programs also include the opportunity to go for professional certifications as well

 

If you don't meet the requirements for the CITP, they do the RITTech award (professional registration)

Not to insult your current skill set but have you ever done a Manager training course for the people you manage?

 

I know a few people have done them, its all about the people so not an IT course, and teaches you good skills for managing you team so could be useful for the CV and may have some cool things for you to learn about.

That's true, soft skills are not one to be overlooked... I posted this a little while ago:
