Laptop is making grinding noise

Hi guys

 

Laptop user is claiming that laptop is making grinding noise now and then. I have cleaned the fan and open the lots of files to get the memory and cpu usage above 90%- Laptop started to make the noise again.

 

Do you think that increasing the memory to 16 GB would make some difference.

Laptop is Lenovo ThinkPad L480,processor Core i5 with 8GB

Sounds to me like it's the hard drive mechanics. Is there scope to get an SSD fitted?

Laptop already has ssd drive but it is Lenove lense30256gmsp34meat3ta

 

Goolge guru is showing alot of comments about it but I am getting the impression that Lenovo does not acknowledge the problem.

Just to be a bit obtuse - make sure that no-one has put something on the system that plays a grinding noise at random intervals

 

you know - as a joke or something

 

and, in case you are wondering, Yes I have seen that - spent ages looking for something until I found that it stopped when I muted the speakers

I opened the laptop yesterday to clean the fan, could not find anything suspicious inside.

How old is the laptop, it's possible the fan has worn and is getting unstable after a period, especially under load. Not common these days, but still possible.

Does it have a DVD player fitted that's waking up every now and then?

Laptop does not have dvd player, it is almost one year old.

I have decided to run Individual Lenovo Diagnostic tools on the laptop , lets see how it goes.

Hi everyone

I have run the test, harddisk test passed without making any noise, Fan ran throughout the memory and cpu test. During cpu test, fan speed was normal but, during memory test , fan was almost on full speed. I have attached the test results. Please advise.

It must be the fan making the noise, maybe at high speeds like you say. Can you download some software to monitor the system temperatures just to verify what is happening?

Is it still under warranty, if so invoke it.

 

I’d Check to see if Lenovo has any new driver or BIOS updates available.

Bios firmware is already up to date as I get message saying Bios image file is same as bios rom.

I have increased the memory from 8 to 16. Once CPU activity is in range of 50 , fan start to make noise. what should be my base to ring Lenovo. ( you might think it is stupid question but for me it is not - I would open he case saying that fan is making too much noise)

from what you are describing (and experience with Lenovo using the cheapest possible parts), it sounds like it could be one of the bearings in the fan that is on its way out (or something inside) so when the fans ramp up, it is causing vibrations.

 

I would raise a ticket with something like - Grinding noise coming from fan when under increased workloads
