HP250 slow connecting to wifi since win 10 upgrade

Hi,

since upgrading our aging set of laptops (HP250 G1) to windows 10 , several spend ages 3-4 minutes autoconnecting to wifi despite being in range of a strong signal. Once connected they work fine.

 

I've checked the driver versions which appear to be the latest (Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn) V5.07.57.0 (18/5/2015) .

 

This didn't happen with windows 7 despite having the same wifi infrstructure , - any ideas ?

I don't have any HP 250 G1s, but I know our HP 250 G4 had issues with it's Broadcom WLAN card. Despite having the current drivers, it simply wouldn't work on Windows 10 1903/1909, despite working on 1709.

 

I suspect you may be in the same boat that we were in - it's the driver that is the problem. I even bought a brand new Intel AC M.2 WiFi card to replace the Broadcom, but that had it's own problems. So we ended up buying a micro USB dongle WiFi adapter for it and it's been fine since.

Looks like they never released Win10 drivers, can you swap the wifi card inside for something else?

I think dongles will "go missing" as we have about 60 laptops of this make which are handed to students so will look at trialling a different wifi card.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03763062 lists 2 other wifi cards that will work, but any card that fits might. What type of connection does it use?

I've got 20 Aver E13 laptops which have the same problem although these use Atheros wifi cards. Updating the driver didn't help but unticking the box 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' under power management did help and now the laptop connects quickly to the network.

 

I've not ran any tests to see if the battery drains any quicker which I suspect it might but at least it makes the laptop usable.

We had the exact same issue with the HP250’s and ralink cards after the upgrade to W10. Profiles are bigger with W10 so I think this didn’t help. We changed the cards for £10 each and they were a lot better. Let me know if you want to know the new wifi card make and I’ll check.

Thanks Zourous - if you have a card that you've used that works that would be useful thanks. Luckily it seems like the network cards are pretty accessible and easy to replace.

They are only N, but it was good enough for us and we were balancing price against the age of the laptop. Apparently the supplier had thousands in stock, so hopefully this is still the case.
