Networking Question for PCs between 2 Sites (DHCP question!)

Hi guys

may seem a silly question!

 

Got 2 small sites setup

Site1 : x 10 PC's with onsite server with AD/DHCP/DNS etc

Site2: x 7 PCs no server on this site or anything but joined to school domain on site 1

 

Site2 PCs are domain joined to the Server on Site one, login works fine shares correct and everything else OK, we have one router each site managed by SWGFL so both talking to each other

 

Now not sure if its me but Site 1 PCs all the machines there Server is dishing out IP address from its DHCP Scope

However on site2 seems the router is dishing out the IP addresses is this normal?

 

and the only way i managed to join the domain with site2 pcs is to change the DNS on the PCs on site2 and joined the domain then and it worked fine

 

Is this normal or is there something i need to do? Not to mention aswell login times for Site2 machines seems to be bit slow!

Yes that seems normal, if the router is dishing out ip addresses in site 2, dns will have to be redirected to allow communication to the domain machines.

 

I have a similar setup but have resorted to putting in a standard workstation as an active director server in my second site to speed up logons, I have also redirected user areas to a replicated share to allow quicker document access for use users in my site 2.

Had hundreds of sites running like that, just except I get the DNS of site 1 pushed out via DHCP and you won't have any issues.

That's fine, domain joined machines find their server via dns, so you need them to use the server's dns, that's what all that _msdcs etc bits are in the dns server
