Sharepoint for network drives

Good afternoon,

I have been a long term watching in the forums and seen that a lot of schools are starting to move to onedrive for homedrives and sharepoint for network drives,

 

Just a few questions :

I would be mapping the shared network drive using the ondrive GPO - how does this work with MFA?

How have people got round the 256 character limit, as teachers love having subfolders, was it just a culture change?

Finally, how do you manage student logins, as adding the sharepoint using the gpo can take anywhere from 5mins to 8hours.

Don't know about the mapping as we don't map it, would have thought you'd need to set up conditional access to exclude them from needing to use MFA while on site (think you need to buy Azure P1 licences for this feature though)

They just have to learn not to nest files a million folders deep, honestly some of them were paths like "\School\Teaching\Subject\Exams\GCSE\Exams 2019\GCSE 2019\Practise\Assessments", still have difficulty convincing some people about this though (and the fact that the sync client has a different length limit than Word/Excel do when saving directly to SharePoint)

Students access SharePoint in the browser, however I believe you can run a command to add a library which happens pretty much instantly (it's what clicking Sync in the browser runs), been a while so can't quite remember the format unfortunately

 

Staff shared drives are now in Teams so staff use those via the browser or the Teams app, some people have synced the libraries behind their teams but this is done ad-hoc per user following instructions of "click this" rather than anything we've done in policies for them.

 

OneDrive is mapped via Files on Demand sync client, through the GPO. Problems with this are that if the user logs off before it has finished uploading changes, well they don't get uploaded as it just quits.

We use IAM Cloud Drive Mapper to map SharePoint document libraries, you can download a trial of their software if you want to try it out. Not sure about MFA as we don't use that here.
