Student Volunteer

Hi,

 

So we've had a college student (former student at one of the schools in our federation) who has asked to come and volunteer/help out with the IT in school. Whilst he is here he, is looking at all aspects of IT in the school, he is going into lessons with the IT lead, but will also be spending some time with me (the IT tech).

 

I'd really appreciate some ideas of what to show him, other than what I deal with on a day to day basis, callouts etc. I know its vague and generic, but what would you like to have been shown when considering working in ICT. I want to really show how interesting our world can be lol.

Maybe format some old hard drives? Think all our mice are ball'less haha

Get him to shadow you and ask him his thoughts before you troubleshoot an issue and maybe go through some of your old tickets and provide your insight into things. A newbie is going to like all the flashy stuff to begin with, like a behind the scenes of the IT infrastructure, classroom management (Impero/NetSupport), server room, etc.

 

We found it hard when we had a volunteer, especially a previous student because we can't give any admin access, since he still knew other students in the school. It would be great if we had a volunteer in the middle of a large deployment of hardware. That's what really got me into this world during my apprenticeship, upgrading the Dell machines from 64MB RAM to 128MB, cleaning them out, re-imaging them drive by drive using IDE parallel cables and a master drive. Obviously a lot more is automated and easier these days, but it's the techie stuff that they'll enjoy.

Yeah, I think I'm going to ask him to install neverware on some of our small lenovo laptops - we've purchased some licenses, Get him to buff the RAM and swap out the HDD for some SSDs we have lying around. The fact he's doing it all of his own back I want to keep him interested.
