Papercut NG PINs

Hi,

 

We currently use Papercut Ng on site and authenticate users with active directory. We're looking at contracting out all the printers and papercut to an external company.

 

We were curious in how the PIN authentication works. I can see you can manually add a PIN within the user settings but not bulk generate them.

 

Is it better to automatically generate 4 digit card IDs? can that number be used to authenticate at the printers. We're not interested in physical cards, just a 4 digit number per user.

We've only just got this setup over Christmas, worked perfectly with users getting their printing ID numbers and signing into devices fine. I'm just reading through that page now, according to the page it's available for both NG and MF. Noticed within the Sync settings it can also bring over an ID from AD. Do you use this or are IDs solely generated within Papercut?

Are the printers still deployed through a server on site or does it all work differently when managed?

 

I've heard some people say they've had a system where a user can print a document and then release it at any printer they like.

This on our one site print server. You need to delete all printers from user devices, then deploy virtual print queues. We have two virtual queues, one B&W and one Colour. Those queues then point to printers of your choice. So a user prints to the B&W queue, goes up to their desired machine, enters their ID number and releases the job. If you still directly deploy the printers to users instead of the virtual print queue then documents will print automatically without any ID number being entered (we've got this setup for our younger Junior School students who won't be using the virtual print queues or ID numbers). Use Group Policy to delete the printers and deploy the new virtual print queues.

 

There is also a sneaky way where you can log onto your personal papercut account on a web browser and remotely release held documents. However we're not telling anyone about that!

You'll most likely need PaperCut Embedded on the copiers (i.e. the MF version) if you want to do print release where they enter a code into the copier. We use both auto generated and imported from AD (as there's space for 2 PINs per user), we store the ID off the RFID cards used for the lunch systems etc in the employeeID field in AD and import this as the secondary PIN. We then have RFID readers installed on the copiers (emulating a keyboard) where they can present their card instead of typing the number in.

Sorry I should have stated, yes you need this deployed to each MFD. You will need to purchase a licence for each device you want to deploy Find-Me printing to via your PaperCut reseller.

Yes that's basically the difference, and as far as I'm aware you can only get it from a print solutions company (so managed print) rather than direct.
