Windows Photo Viewer Problem

I'm wondering if any of you have had this problem with opening JPG files in Windows Photo Viewer. With certain pictures, a message comes up that says "Windows Photo Viewer can't display this picture because there might not be enough memory available on your computer. Close some programs or free up some hard disk space and try again." Memory doesn't seem to be a problem as the machine has 7 plus GB usable. The HDD has approximately 200 GB free...Google points me towards https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/3df8ceb4-db3b-4820-878b-b4550ccd7d82/photoviewer-not-displaying-due-to-not-enough-memory?forum=w7itproappcompat. It basically tells you to remove any advanced color management profiles, reboot and try again. This does not work. Other pictures open as normal. I am leaning towards corrupt files, however I can open these pictures in Chrome or import them into Word documents. I've tried this on 2 different computers, same effect.

The machines are members of a domain. I am seeing this message on 2 computers, 1 of which is mine. I am the domain administrator, logged into the computer as the domain administrator. The user's computer is a member of the same domain, and the user is a domain user who happens to be a local machine admin on the machine she uses (for another program to work properly). The image files were sent by another user in our school, and they are downloaded locally. I even had the publisher of the pictures send them to me separately, thinking maybe something happened during the download. He sent me PDF versions, which I can open fine.

Could you try an alternate image viewer?

 

eg: Irfanview

OK. This is where I would lose interest in Windows Photo Viewer. Is there a compelling reason that they should be opened in Photo Viewer?

No, it's just user habit, and that's the default app. It's also why I hate when people send files as pictures instead of PDFs. They just need to print them, everything is easier as a PDF.

Irfanview, with an extension, can handle PDFs as well as JPGs.
