leeupo Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I'm looking to purchase a server which can be located in my school and used as an Intranet, (a moodle for each department) and also used as an Internet server to allow home / school access etc. Ideally this would connect to our existing Win 2000 curriculum and admin servers I like the look of a Karoshi install and am looking for a company around the Yorkshire area who could install a server for me that will do what i want. I'm the IT teacher so excuse the lack of technical knowledge Any advice on what i should be looking to purchase would be appreciated especially any companies to avoid. Would also be interested in likely costs.
plexer Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 A Karoshi install will provide the services to clients that you allready have with your windows 2000 setup i.e logging in etc... If you are confortable with windows at the moment moodle etc.. can be installed on a windows server. Ben

I would also like these to be accessed outside of school via the internet. Linux or Windows doesn't really matter as long as the server does what i want!
plexer Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 If you want to give each department their own moodle you are going to be looking for something pretty hefty either way to run them. Why not just one moodle for the school and split that into departmental categories then they can put their own courses in there? Ben
leeupo Posted February 25, 2006 Author Posted February 25, 2006 I realise it will need to be a hefty server, but the money is available so i would rather get the spec which can cope with a seperate moodle for each dept, than set up a cheap server which can't cope later on.

leeupo Posted February 25, 2006 Author Posted February 25, 2006 I understand what you are saying and can see how it would be easier to manage etc. I still need to spec up a server and as i have said above as the funding is there then i want it over specified to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible.

Ric_ Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 Buying a Linux server is no different to buying a Windows server... Make sure that it is branded and has good warranty. If all your other servers are HP, for instance, get another HP server. Stick big hard disks in it and use RAID since it will be holding lots of important VLE stuff. Since Moodle is basically a big database app, make sure that there is plenty of RAM too.
plexer Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 The typical production environment: Operating System Linux, Windows Server, MacOS X Server, other Unixen Processor Intel-Based, PowerPC Memory 4GB or greater Software PHP 4.3.x or PHP 5 On our server, a Dell dual 2.8Ghz with 3GB of RAM, we currenlty have 200 courses with ~2800 active students, average 20-30 students/course though one has1047. Something along those lines I reckon running either server 2003 or linux. 2 companies doing moodle support installation etc... in the UK are http://www.pteppic.net/ & http://www.synergy-learning.com/ Ben

That supports 800 staff and students and over 300 PC's/Laptops. Another school runs on 2.4, and 1.5GB RAM with 1070 staff and students and 450 PC's/Laptops, so don't worry too much about buying the latest Dell or HP servers to run Linux and Karoshi. Both these systems were hand-built at £600 per server, but if you are not technically knowledgable then it maybe best to stay with the 'big boys'. Let me know if you have any questions Jo

(http://www.northwestlinux.co.uk) they have done all my server work and installed 6 internet servers for me. There box is built to the spec you want and includes filtering for your internet connection. They are well worth a chat with. If you want more details or references for them contact me
