Morning,

 

Can anyone recommend a decent backup storage NAS box for Veeam? We have two older Buffalo link stations but one has died and the other is showing errors - so I need to replace them asap.

We use a QNAP box for ours. Its a TS1279U and is now several years old but has been rock solid. Interface is nice and straightforward.

Works well with Veeam backing up VM's and hardware based servers.

They do lots of different rackmount models so likely to find one that meets your requirements. We bought ours half empty and put more discs in as the storage needs expanded.

We have a Qnap TS-870 here also with Veeam, been rock solid.....always having firmware updates and software improvements, however it hasn't missed a beat once.

We have a QNAP TVS-1271U-RP, which is a 12-bay rack-mountable SAN, purchased back in 2015. It's been rock solid and I have recently upgraded the drives from 12x 3TB to 6x 8TB, changed from RAID5 to RAID6 and also changed the volume type from CIFS to iSCSI. Coupled with it's 4Gb connection (4x 1Gb built-in ports, trunked), our backup performance it now where we want it. Our 19x virtual servers are configured with forward incremental backups and they're all generally complete within a couple of hours (unless big changes are made, the synthetic full is being created or it's performing a backup health check, the latter two can take quite some time).

 

I shouldn't need to touch the QNAP or VEEAM configuration for a good while now.

Depends on the capacity you think you may need. We got RS2416RP+ last time so a RS2418RP+ would give you loads of room and the possibility to expand. Though an RS820+ may be better on the budget.

We went for a QNAP TS-1232XU-RP-4G - a 2U rack-mount device with 12 2.5" slots at the front and built-in support for NVMe RAM SSDs that QNAP's software can use as a tiered storage layer. This is connected via a 10Gbe ISCSI connection to a server running Veeam, with the volume managed by the QNAP device formatted as a ReFS volume for Veeam to use. If we hadn't already have had the server to run Veeam on I would have probably looked at getting a single server to both run Windows Server and Veeam and host the disks - using a ReFS volume seems to provide performance / space-saving features over any other kind of volume Veeam can use.
