The sound I heard was the sonic boom of two RAF jets sent to intercept the potentially wayward jet. Link: London 'explosion': People woken by loud bang which 'shook houses' [The Mirror] ...It appeared a Boeing 767 plane lost communication and the RAF sent two planes for investigation. Mil Radar, a Twitter account dedicated to air force and navy monitoring, posted a screen shot of a [sic] RAF plane flying past Oxford. The post read: "At approx 0400z Royal Air Force Typhoons callsign 5EA26 & 5EA27 launched from RAF Coningsby to an unresponsive aircraft. "N725SH lost communication with ATC and now seems to be back in communication with relevant control. Royal Air Force Voyager ZZ334 launched from Brize Norton for QRA Typhoon support."...

elsiegee40 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 It happened here a couple of years. There was one heck of a bang and no obvious cause. Two scrambled RAF jets going supersonic to intercept a Russian military plane in our case.
AJWhite1970 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Way back in the day you used to regularly hear a sonic boom over the south coast at about 5pm caused by Concord which I was always told was it leaving Paris but no idea if that was true or not

witch Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 I was brought up on the outskirts of the Heathrow flight path. We heard sonic booms all the time. Never from an RAF jet though, I don't think. I would love to hear one again

I would love to hear one again It would have to have been an RAF jet, Concorde or other aircraft that can achieve supersonic speeds of mach 1 or above. Anything else wouldnt be able to achieve speeds fast enough.

Yes, the presumption that I wouldnt know what sort of plane makes a sonic boom - particularly as we were brought up with them and therefore much discussion was had locally about it - is a little bit...annoying... But I saw Concord flying many times so there's that
