Fibre home broadband not perfect?

Hi all

 

I know.. First World problems n'all! But wanted some advice.

 

We started off on 75mbps BT superfast broadband which no matter what time of day or night we'd always achieve better or bang on speeds of 75mbps.

 

We since upgraded to 154mbps Ultrafast BT broadband and hit around 135mbps so missing 20mbps?

 

Why is this as we have fibre, taking WiFi out of the equation and using the speed test on the router confirms this is all we ever get? I thought with fibre there wasn't a limit and no traffic management had to be done to the network... Because fibre..?

 

Anyway for Christmas we have the whole family staying and BT have said we can upgrade for the month to 300mbps! We'll have 30 people over...

 

So am I right in thinking we won't get that in real world terms as our broadband isn't even capable of supporting 154mbps?

Still have contention ratios to think about. 154 would be the speed if you was the only person on that line using the bandwidth.

Ah ok, still strange though because I would have thought if this was the case our 75mbps broadband would go up and down also but that was always consisten compared to our new upgrade?

 

But if I was to buy the 300mbps variant would we still be effected and be limited to 134mbps if sharing bandwidth with others?

135 should be fine for 30 people as long as you have decent WiFi points instead of crud ones (Looking at you HomeHub) and all 30 of them aren't expecting to stream 4k at the same time! We have around 60mbps (Rural broadband) have about 15 devices on it at once and even with family and friends around never had issues with bandwidth.

Ah ok cheers mate! My main worry was the little-un's that come with an iPad and a phone, don't interact and watch Youtube videos all day instead, there is around 10 of them

Same i have 3 AC Nanos, old house with thick walls, not kidding the rear wall of the house is around 1m thick so no coverage to the extension. Luckily got an external cable and wired up a point in the back room to sort it.

The state of broadband in the UK is shocking. You have have a 10Gbps LAN at home and still only get 8Mbps on "broadband". They've got most of the country by the proverbials until they realise the internet is an essential need for today's society and spend the money on that, instead of vanity projects like trains nobody wants or asked for

If we had better internet we wouldn't need to go places, could just VR.

 

17 million homes have Virgin Media, that means 7 million without. Question is of those how many have FTTC?

The rating you get for your broadband speed is a best case scenario assuming NONE of your neighbors or neighbouring streets have broadband.

 

Clearly that is not the case so you are sharing with tens or hundreds of other people.

 

You may find you are able to hit near the max rating at like 3am when everyone else is sleeping but during the day? Probably not.

Depends on the connection from the green box to the internet mostly, although the crosstalk at the green box is a slight problem, and the reason uploads are slower than downloads in general on DSL.

 

Usually each box has about 4 fibers, each doing 1Gbps currently, 1 is used to start with, other 3 are for upgrades. The fiber is shared between about 100 houses.
