genesis Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 Hi I have brought a Microsoft surface pro for one of the staff and the staff visits schools for meetings and many of the schools don’t have Wi-Fi access. I would like to set up the mobile data in the Surface pro and what is the best way of having a mobile data for the surface pro. Secondly will the surface pro have a SIM slot. Thirdly do you know any provider that would do Data only deal . Any help much appreciated. Thanks.
DalekSec Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 What model of Surface Pro did you get? The latest (7) does not have built in LTE, some other models do, so the 7 also doesn't have a SIM card reader. As for a data only deal, we use 3 for our 4G dongle.
genesis Posted November 20, 2019 Author Posted November 20, 2019 I brought Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Tablet . So if it not having the SIM card reader. Do i need to buy the 3 for our 4G dongle and will this get plugged into the USB port?
genesis Posted November 20, 2019 Author Posted November 20, 2019 Gifgaff provide good data deals and if i buy the SIM and put on the dongle will it work? https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/ee-767-commercial.html https://www.giffgaff.com/sim-only-plans
DalekSec Posted November 21, 2019 Posted November 21, 2019 The 4G dongle we have has a full size SIM Card slot, which i guess most will have. It gives out it's own SSID to which the Surface can connect to and then thus to 4G. You might be able to get USB ones, not something i've looked into.
elsiegee40 Posted November 21, 2019 Posted November 21, 2019 (edited) My husband uses an unlocked MiFi bought from Amazon with his surface pro. He currently has an EE sim in it. It’s quite handy because, when the signal is iffy, you can put the mifi where the signal is strongest rather than sitting on the window ledge to work. Edited November 21, 2019 by elsiegee40
p858snake Posted November 21, 2019 Posted November 21, 2019 With our surface pro users, they used to have a pool of USB Wifi Modems (4G dongles) for going into court, we recently transitioned each of them to having a iphone that they just hotspot off. The main concern would probably be data usage, depending on your plans and limits, and ensuring staff member remember to turn off data usage and changing back to wifi once they leave the meeting etc.
