We are having great problems with laptops shutting down from what looks like battery failure even though the batteries were replaced 9 months ago. They were working fine until a few weeks ago but now out of 30 laptops 5 or 6 will not last the hour lesson.

 

On a fully charged laptop I watched the battery indicator and it rapidly dropped to 90% then stayed steady at 90%. After around 10 minutes the laptop just went off without warning. On powering back up the event log says the previous shutdown was unexpected. Booting up on charge the battery shows 89% and increases until fully charged.

 

Now an odd thing happened. The laptop was next to me still on charge while I dealt with other matters and the laptop went off again. It was logged on as admin with the power setting set to not sleep while on charge but it still went off after 20 minutes and again the event log says the previous shutdown was unexpected. I'm trying duplicate what happened but it's been on for 30 minutes now and still not gone off.

 

The laptops are Lenovo 410 which I know are old but with the new batteries they were working fine. All run Win10 1903 and have the latest updates.

So the laptop will power off even if its being actively used. Just to separate from goes into stand-by then dies for some reason.

It wasn't being used when I had the laptop but can't say when the class had them.

You could have a blank PowerPoint presenting which will bypass any power settings, the display shouldn't go to sleep with this in place. We had some old Lenovo x230i's where we replaced the batteries with brand new ones, the battery life was still rubbish on them. Ended up replacing them all with Lenovo 300e's.

I've been round and set the laptops to low CPU performance to save power and dimmed the screen. When I got back the laptop I had on test was still logged on after 90 minutes although it was on charge, but it doesn't explain why it went off before.

Does the laptop have an option for battery calibration? Sometimes it's in the bios, or a separate piece of software. Will completely discharge the battery so the gauge is more accurate.

No nothing like that but I am starting to think the batteries are going even though they are only 9 months old.
