Student looking for work - Crosby area

Hi all.

 

Sorry if this is the wrong forum (If it is, mods please move it), but I'm interested in maybe doing some small jobs for schools/institutions who need an extra hand over half term (Starting next year, not doing any Xmas work!!).

 

I could do new PC setups, MDT deployment / imaging, server upgrades or just general IT support (Showing people how to turn on a projector, etc).

 

I'm 16 and currently still in school but do have a small software development job. I'll be willing to do small / odd jobs during half term in exchange for a job / character reference if possible.

 

My skills include:

 

Advanced Knowledge of Active Directory.

Some basic knowledge of Powershell and VBA scripting.

Lots of expertise in MDT and WDS.

Some experience in Exchange 2010/13/16.

Lots of experience in Citrix, RDS and VMware Horizon.

Experience in Hyper-V, ESXI and VCenter.

 

 

I obviously have no experience whatsoever with EdTech specific software as I'm unable to acquire that for testing.

 

I'm looking to build up my skills and possibly acquire some actual server hardware early next year (So far been doing all my testing in Azure. Getting quite expensive!).

 

If anyone is interested in this PM me. I'll also be able to work during term time in the summer as Year 11's leave early. Since I'm under 18 I presume I don't need to be background checked.

 

If you do PM me please say who you work for as if anyone from my school replies that would be a clear conflict of interest.

FYI - Minimum age for DBS checks is 16 year old, so it's likely that a school might want to do a background check if you were working on site and going to be in contact with students. However if work was over the holiday(s) when no students are in...

My current school already has a IT Team so don't think they would need my help. They are also aware of my skills so I feel like they would ask me if they needed help.

 

Pretty sure it would be a major conflict of interest as if I was doing imaging they'd have to give me the password for the BIOS and the imaging account (Not saying I would, but they could assume I'd misuse it). An AD password is easy to change but having to change all the BIOS passwords after me knowing it would be a pain.

 

 

I've heard from a few people that I only need to be background checked to work with students unsupervised. Again, like you said chances are students won't be in during half term anyways.

I'll maybe have a word with my head of IT next year but assuming they won't want anything done.

It depends what you are after out of it - money is tight in school's - but if school is part of a trust, and trust are upgrading a number of pc's for example; they might be willing to throw minimum wage at a week worth of help for example. If I go back about 10 years or so, we used to have some students help out - benefit of this was they knew the school, the staff know them etc. i.e. you could say "go swap PC in room 40" and they'd be off.

 

I'm not based in Liverpool, so can't help you out - but good luck and hope you find something.

You might find schools have a policy not to employ under 18s or current/ex students until a certain age. I know my school does and another local school does. But they may do a work experience type thing.

 

Have you tried contacting local companies? You may not get paid but it's good experience and it could lead onto a job once you have left school.

 

If a school does take you on through paid work then you may have to do a DBS as some schools have holiday schools as catch up revision/sessions.

 

Personally if I were you I'd look at aiming for companies rather than schools.

A policy not to recruit based on age is illegal.

As above have said, check with your current school to see if they can use you, if they can't then try others; there are a few to choose from in Crosby. I'm assuming you're looking at Secondary but try the Primaries as well, your old Primary might welcome you back.

I believe my school does indeed have policies against hiring ex/current students. I'm fine getting a DBS check as long as I don't have to pay for it (Don't really know how it works, think it's via the police?)

 

Also, I know that the IT Manager who works at my Primary is on EduGeek as I believe I saw a pic of our school on here. Not sure if I should @ mention him here.

 

Actually had a little chat with my English teacher about something on the lines on this and I think he said Teachers aren't allowed to have any sort of relationship other than a teaching one for at least 5 years after the student has left the school. Not sure if that's the law or school policy.

That’s a school policy put in place for Safeguarding reasons A sensible one too

 

Why not speak to your NM offline or via PM and ask if they mind being tagged? That’s the safest way of doing it

@adamc Fair play to you for coming on a tech forum at 16 (and still in school) seeking work experience. I still live in Crosby from when I was younger so we may have gone to the same school, alas the school I work in now is a fair drive away from Crosby. You come across as being mature, however I would echo comments above that perhaps companies with larger teams is something you may well want to consider, especially if you already have a good grasp of the technologies you have noted (you may feel that you're not being stretched/challenged enough in a school environment, as I suspect few schools would be willing to grant you any significant degree of access rights at this time that would allow you to utilize the skills you have gained).

 

I am co-incidentally seeking assistance but for day-to-day issues and during term-time, yet what you have already learnt makes me think you would feel more involved in larger institutions where there are sufficient staff to guide you and perhaps be able/willing to involve you more in the management side.
