Free MDM Server

Hi,

 

We are planning on getting more iPads in the near future, at present we have 12 iPads, this is a nightmare keeping them updated with the apps. I enrolled on the Apple School Manager which seemed the best thing to do but it says about connecting a MDM server. I've had a look but can't seem to find any.

 

Does anyone know of a site that they use when it comes to a MDM server.

Another vote for Mosyle. Free version and you can upgrade to the paid product if you need the features. Successfully running in many of our primary schools.

Hey all

We just taken over the IT (LEA) of a very small infant school, their previous MSP left the ipad management in a mess no one knows any login details and the other company seemed to have deployed apps by bringing their own personal mac to the school and pushing it through there (Long story but its a total mess) so we going to start from basics

 

so now we having to sort it out

The school have around half a dozen or so laptops and ideally what we looking to do is something simple as just deploying apps to all the laptops and locking them down to a certain extent

 

money is low for the school does the free mosyle allows for basic stuff like this? whats your experience been?

 

dont need anything fancy at all just a case of if a teacher likes an app we want to be able to just download and push it out to all ipads thats all!

What sort of laptops? Mosyle is for Apple products only. If Windows laptops on a domain then you would be better off setting things up via Group Policy.

 

If it is only the iPads you need to configure then you won't need to use the paid version and can get away with using the free Mosyle Manager.

You will need a Mac with Apple Configurator to initially wipe and prep the iPads then use Mosyle to do the rest.

You will not need a Mac to wipe the iPads, wipe each of them once enrolled into Apple School Manager and configured for DEP you will not need AC2. You can use any Mac you may have as a caching server.

 

However there may be massive stumbling block to wiping them...Activation Lock.

 

If the previous provider has signed into any or all of the iPads with a Personal Apple ID when you try and wipe each once you will need the password for this Apple ID. If you can contact them you can ask them to sign into the Apple ID account via iCloud.com and remove the iPad(s) form that account.

 

You will need to buy any or all paid for and free apps again as these will be associated with the Apple ID that was used.

School managed to get meraki so got that activated and working..now just need to enrol them to the DEP Program in apple school manager

Just one thing though we managed to get it working today got them all on Meraki console and showing up...but for Supervision mode i am assuming we need to be enrolled on the DEP program under school manager correct?

at the moment when we try to push apps from meraki console password keeps popping up each time

 

I guess once under supervised mode we can push it all silently?

Yes, once the devices are enrolled into DEP in ASM, you then have to erase each iPad to get it Supervised. To get them enrolled you will need to contact the reseller you purchased them from, give them your institution number and enter the reseller's organisation number, bear in mind many iPad resellers are not DEP certified however if they actually bought them from a DEP certified reseller you can add their number.

 

One other important thing to check, AFAIK the free version of Meraki does not allow "device assigned app" distribution so will leave you at a dead end, best to invest in a better one, maybe Moysle if you are stuck for budget.
