Hi All,

With Malware, Phishing and Ransomware on the rise (again) I wonder if SIMS still needs that pesky mapped drive?

I've experimented and it seems like it doesn't - Only for things like Nova or Options, but I don't know if it may cause issues later.

Does anyone have any research to add?

In almost all cases, no, it does not. Those who interact with things like Exams Organiser may need it to place/retrieve CTF files, but we give it as-needed rather than by default.

As above, there's no reason for the majority to need access to the SIMS area. Make sure your .ini files point to server name and SQL instance etc rather than to a folder or share location, and map certain areas for exams/timetable/data managers, usually ctfin/out, examin/out folders.

Assuming a standard install, write permissions will be needed by the following users on the following folders:

Timetabler – S:\SIMS\SNOVA

Exams Officer – S:\SIMS\EXAMS

Anyone using Options – S:\SIMS\OPTIONS

Anyone using Attendance letter templates – S:\SIMS\Attend

Anyone processing CTF’s and ATF’s – S:\SIMS\STAR
