Currently developing a new website for the school and everyone has an opinion on what font to use for the main body text, some people clearly have no idea...

 

What's the current fashion for website fonts especially with regards to DDA, clarity etc? Something widely available that's Sans Serif?

 

I know this is a question with no specific right answer, but there are also many wrong answers, so just looking for peoples preferences really.....

I'd look on Google Fonts and pick one that you think works well - Roboto or Open Sans are good "safe" choices.

 

Don't follow fashion, pick something that's (a) easy to read, and (b) simple, non-flashy.

General theory, as I was taught, is that sans-serif fonts are cleaner and easier to read on websites, versus serif fonts being easier on printed paper.

 

Honestly, though, it comes down to branding: if you want to look modern, go sans-serif, if you want to look traditional, go serif. We used serif on our website redesign, because we're a century-old grammar school, and it matches our image.

 

Google Fonts is a rabbit hole that will steal hours from you if you're as nerdy as me dead easy to use on your website though, and entirely free. Pick a font that has real styles for bold, italic etc.; they always look better than a browser faking it on a roman style.

Isn't there something about picking 2 or three that work well together? You could have one for your headings and another for your main body text. One could be serif and the other non, etc.
