Door Lock thread continuation

For those who wanting to continue the conversation that was going on in IT request thread. I was an innocent follower of the thread and was going to suggest all those guilty as charged were to be 'locked out', but thought better of it! In the last primary, we had a key password lock on the door to the ICT suite, which also hard a corner for the single IT technician (me for s short while) which also housed the two school Windows servers and iMac server along with the all the ipads in a station and a store cupboard. Where the security failed is that there was a custom made wooden open ended box that contained a red house brick that was used as a door stop most of the time.

Makes me very grateful to have a brand new building with sensible key suiting and one master key. A previous job had all sorts of "odd" keys, and various doors required various special "jiggles" to get them to open. We ended up looking like jailers with our clinking keys!

People have no forward thinking about the cost in time and money their actions will cause. Brand new school, added a DT cupboard, did the door get its own key? Of course it did. That's how this whole thing starts, grr.

 

Fob reader broke on my IT classroom door, now I have to spend 15 seconds answering the door instead of pressing the release button by my desk, and 15 seconds every time I exit. Plus the door lock now jams. 5 mins wasted per day, 1000, 4 hours a year, a whole week over 10 years, per door. probably costing them £600 not to fix it.

I remember in one place I worked they would try and re-suite the whole site, run out of money so 80% was done. Facilities tried to finish the job but the locks were discontinued so they bought another set of matching locks, changed 50%, run out of money. So in the end I had a bunch of 16 keys with no logic to the suite, one just had to look at the lock on the door and take a guess as to which key it was!

 

We've got a SALTO suite in my current place, I feel I take it for granted now.

Yeah SALTO is great. It's pricey to start with but when you look at the cost of issuing physical keys, dealing with loss of keys and security management/lockdowns etc in a school then its well worth the money. If you're retrofitting an older building, work with your site manager and see if there is a small wing or block you could "SALTO" first and then SLT can see the benefits of the system and hopefully be persuaded to fit out the whole site.

We have a mix of Paxton locks (pants), where you wave your card in front of the lock and ASSA locks, where you post your card in a slot. The ASSAs are really reliable, but we do have one problem. We have a door where the battery has failed and the thingo we have to open a door with a dead battery is also dead, as we found out yesterday. This needs new batteries and they aren't your standard AA or AAA. We've got some on order but who knows when they will come.
