Procurve 2510G TFTP issues

Hello,

 

I am in the process of backing up the configs on all my HP switches we have on our estate. I've managed to get config copies of most switches that include core etc. However, I am having some issues on certain switches notably when trying to transfer to my TFTP server. The command in question is: copy running-config tftp . the switch goes away and thinks about it, then comes back with the message " 00000k Peer unreachable "

 

Troubleshooting this so far: I can ping the TFTP server from the switch. The firewall is totally off on the machine that the TFTP server sits on. The TFTP service is running. Ive managed to pull other configs back using the same method on other switches.

 

I'm guessing that TFTP maybe switched off on the switch in question. However, I am unable to get a command together that checks it, or switches it on. This might not even be the problem, so hoping that someone has overcome the issue.

 

Is anyone able to help?

Have you got ip ssh file transfer on the switch??

 

I believe that disables tftp. BTW tftp is also less secure and is based on UDP against SSH which is encrypted and runs on TCP

I don't know if I've got IP SSH file transfer on the switch, do you know how I would check please? When I look at the general settings it says TFTP is enabled.

 

So is there a way of getting the startup and running configs off the switch without using TFTP? The HP documentation I'm reading uses TFTP in the commands.

In the config you will be looking for the config line ip ssh filetransfer

 

If you want to automate it you have a few choices both I believe i.e. SSH, telnet commands or 3rd party/vendor software. I would not use telnet or tftp as the transfer is unencrpyted. SSH is better.

 

If you want to manually do it you can log into the switch and either set putty to save the output then do a show run or jus do a show run and copy the output to a txt file

Might also be able to grab the config from the switch management on http.

 

You can use PowerShell with WinSCP to automate SSH backups with Procurve switches but not Aruba-CX from what I understand, following is the basic setup. Also remember that the password is mostly stored in the script but you can use PowerShell to capture/encrpt the password into a separate file then call the file in the script.

I can't see the "ip ssh filetransfer' line under running config, just looking at HP article on setting that up now.

 

I'm just trying to get the config from it so I can replace it and copy the config back.
