Looking for some suggestions for home filtering/parental control approaches.

Not got any setup yet as my kids still young but I here Open DNS is a good one. They have a home solution.

I use open DNS for now. The kids are both under 10 and it’s been fine so far. Although it’s been used in conjunction with a Mac and parental controls. But for us, blocking YouTube is the main thing. So we supervise access or they have a ‘kids safe’ app on their iPad.

 

It wouldn’t be long before my eldest figures some workarounds though. Or just downright hacks [emoji3]

Yeah, if working in schools taught me anything - its that there's always a way round!

 

Tried to impress on mine that it was better not to go to the darkest areas on the net - but I don't think I was listened to, otoh he seems to have emerged as a sensible, sensitive adult at the other end, so...

Although minimally, it is covered from the outset - "home filtering/parental control". To add a more little detail, what would be wanted is to protect what's accessible on the home devices to age appropriate content, as far as possible, as I think we all know the limitations. Additionally, to be able to monitor and review what is being viewed. Flagging up of concern would be useful. Supporting access for at the least Windows and Chromebook devices, but also ideally tablets and mobile phones, although the phone requirement is low down the priority. The ability to time control access would also be useful, perhaps with the ability of remote shutdown of access, perhaps via a supporting mobile phone app. I'm not sure key logging and screenshots are required, although I have seen this in the school environment. I will acknowledge one of the best approaches for this sort of thing is to only allow access to the internet in a family room and keep an eye open!

Not sure if this is of help but Sophos home will allow an administrator to block categories of websites such as Adult content etc... Then you could always invest in a router? I had an old Asus DSL-N55U a couple of years back, moved full Unifi kit now but that little router was able to block websites by just typing them into a list. You could set time limits and things also to particular devices.

I use https://www.qustodio.com/ as it is VPN based so when Ipad goes to other place it is still controlled by me.
